Singapore Rugby Sevens Series Match Report Round 1
The first ever Singapore Rugby Sevens Series (SRSS) organised by Singapore Rugby Union kicked off at Bishan Stadium on 18 and 19 September, and was to be an event lasting over 3 weekends. The 7s event saw 7 women’s’ teams in total, with NUS sending in 2 teams.
The first women’s match saw team NUS dandelions warming up the pitch with team Happy Go Lucky. The first few minutes of the game saw both teams equally matched but as the game progressed, both teams tried to edge each other on the scoreboard by putting in 2 tries each. NUS dandelions subsequently lost due to a failed conversion with a narrow 10-12 scoreline to team Happy Go Lucky.
Team NUS Winx Club was next on the field to take on team Awesome, a team primarily consisting of SRC players. Team Awesome broke the silence with an opening try early the first few minutes of the game, which was subsequently returned by a try from NUS Winx Club. However, the experience and attacking phases of team Awesome tested team NUS Winx Club and lapses in the latter’s defence led to team Awesome running in more tries, ending the game with a 26-5 win over NUS Winx Club.
A two-hour break in between seemed to invigorate and recharge the NUS teams, as both teams displayed a spirited match against each other after the break. Both teams fought hard, not giving chances to each other but displays of team spirit and sportsmanship were seen with both teams applauding, encouraging and cheering each other on. A 34-5 scoreline saw NUS dandelions grabbing the win for the match.
NUS dandelions were next to face off with team Awesome after another long recovery break. However, the long break seemed to take its toll on the NUS players as they struggled to put up a strong defence which eventually succumbed to team Awesome‘s penetrating runs, sealing the win 22-0.
The last game of the pool saw NUS Winx Club taking on the field with team Happy Go Lucky. Team Happy Go Lucky was first on the scoreboard, putting in 2 tries without conversions. NUS Winx Club then returned with a try in the second half of the game which was still insufficient to override team Happy Go Lucky’s win with the eventual scoreline 10-5 to the latter.
With all the matches played in the pool and scorelines in, rankings for the second day’s matches came out with NUS dandelions standing at 4th position and NUS Winx Club at 6th position.
Day two of SRSS saw NUS Winx Club take on team STD. With the players brimming with confidence, coupled with fine hands, attack plays and support, NUS Winx Club was more than happy to put in two tries by half time to have a comfortable lead over team STD. Even though team STD came back stronger after the one-minute break, NUS Winx Club refused to give away any chances at the second half, and dominated the match with another 2 tries to put them at a 22-0 win over team STD.
NUS Dandelions was up against Team Awesome next on the field. Team Awesome had the strongest standing in terms of overall position based on the previous day’s matches. Ready to avenge the loss from the previous day match, NUS dandelions gritted their teeth and held up an impressive defence line much to the frustration of team Awesome, who were unable to run their attack lines. The effort paid off with NUS dandelions halving the score from the previous day to a mere 12-0 win to team Awesome.
A short break later saw NUS Winx Club facing off with team Wonder Girls, a team comprising mostly of NTU players. It was set to be an exciting match, with both teams roughly equally matched in terms of strength and experience. Both teams tried to place themselves at an advantage on the scoreboard and by half time, it was two tries to one to NUS Winx Club. The match continued with both teams refusing to give in to each other, taking turns to put in tries in a last bid to win the game. Just right after the full time whistle, the winger from team Wonder Girls managed a last gasp run at the wing to a nail-biting finish through the lapse in defence from NUS Winx Club. With an additional conversion, the eventual winners were team Wonder Girls with a score of 17-15 win over NUS Winx Club.
NUS dandelions were next on the field against team Happy Go Lucky. With a lack of players due to injuries and other commitments, players from NUS Winx Club had to be fielded in also. However, the change in lineup did not seem to affect the play much, with NUS dandelions managing to hold their opponents to only one try by half time. NUS dandelions managed a well fought try in the second half but it was not enough with team Happy Go Lucky running in another try, placing the scoreboard to their favour at 10-5.
